What is the VCH?
The VCH started in 1899, and aims to cover every county and, with each county, every parish in a systematic way. So far 13 counties are complete, 16 are in progress, and only two have yet to have published work. Altogether the VCH has published about 250 volumes covering well over 3000 parishes. Of these 158 volumes are available in a digital format at: British History Online.
The guidelines set out what the VCH is, what we do, how we operate and, above all, how you can be part of this great national enterprise which ranks alongside other multi-contributor projects such as the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, the History of Parliament, the Pevsner ‘Buildings of England’ series and the Oxford English Dictionary.
