Writing a VCH Urban History

VCH town or city histories take a different format to parish histories. They have been designed to give the VCH a distinctive role in the broader context of urban history.

Since the size and complexity of towns differs, both today and in the past, decisions are to some extent made on an ad hoc basis. A large town may warrant a volume on its own, while a smaller one may be the centrepiece of a volume which also includes parishes from its adjoining areas.

The final decision as to whether a town should be treated in a single volume or as part of a volume is always decided in discussion with VCH Central Office.

For a recent example of a town history see: C.P. Lewis and A.T. Thacker, eds., VCH Cheshire: V, I & II: The City of Chester (2003, 2005)
