Launch of Somerset IX

Mary Siraut, editor of the newest Somerset Volume signs a copy for the chairman of Somerset County Council

The most recent VCH volume, Somerset volume IX: Glastonbury and Street, was launched on 31 October 2006 in Glastonbury Abbey Barn, which now forms part of the Rural Life Museum. The magnificent medieval barn was the perfect setting and a display of wicker animals lent an additional rural quality to the proceedings!  Alan Gloak, chairman of Somerset County Council and county councillor for Glastonbury, hosted the event, attended by the Lord Lieutenant and Mayor of Glastonbury, Boydell and Brewer, and other noted dignitaries.  The Chairman welcomed everyone and the Lord Lieutenant thanked the county council for its support for the VCH.  Mary Siraut, the editor in Somerset, then introduced the volume and outlined its content.   Afterwards, Professor John Beckett, Director of the VCH, spoke of the value of the VCH and thanked the county for its support.  Tom Mayberry, the County Heritage Officer, praised the achievements of VCH Somerset and outlined the history of the Abbey Barn.

If you would like to order a copy of Somerset IX, please visit the Boydell and Brewer website.

As well as chapters on Glastonbury and Street, the volume covers Baltonsborough, West Bradley, Butleigh, Compton Dundon, Meare, Podimore Milton, Walton, West Pennard and North Wootton.
