Status: Complete, 3 volumes produced

Completed in 3 volumes, 1904-12, with a separate index in 1914. It owed much to the 18th century tradition of the scientific study of the local environment with sections in Volume I (1904) on geology and natural history as well as prehistory, Anglo-Saxon archaeology, Domesday, ecclesiastical history, and religious houses. The hundreds and parishes were handled in volumes II and III. Work is currently needed to update the volumes.
