Dr Adam Chapman is our new Editor and Training Coordinator and will join our central office team at Senate House in London. Adam joins the VCH from the University of Southampton where he gained his doctorate on the role of Welshmen in English armies in the later middle ages in 2010. He has taught medieval history at several UK higher education institutions and has a varied research background, being interested in the medieval landscape and the application of technology to historical and archaeological research.

His post has been funded for two years in the first instance by the Getty Charitable Foundation, the Basil Samuel Charitable Trust, and others.

Adam will be employing his skills as a medievalist in editing VCH parish histories for publication in hard copy and on our websites. An important part of his role will be to help volunteer projects by providing training materials and guidance, and by editing contributions to VCH Explore produced by volunteers and partner organisations. Adam will be in touch with counties individually as soon as possible to discover how he might be able to help by supporting existing projects or by establishing new avenues of volunteer research and useful partnerships.

Should you have any questions, queries or information about your projects, Adam would be delighted to hear from you. He can be contacted by email at or on 020 7862 8799.
