VCH Herefordshire visit to The Laskett gardens.
1 September, 2011 - 14:30
Sir Roy Strong, who is Patron of the Herefordshire Victoria County History Trust, welcomed 45 supporters with warm words of praise for the Trust and exhortation for their continuing support. He then gave a brief and charming account of how he and his late wife, Dr Julia Trevelyan Oman, had created the gardens. They arrived in Herefordshire in 1973, purchasing The Laskett, an early Victorian house with four acres of land, and set about creating a series of gardens around the house. Sir Roy explained that the gardens are continuing to evolve, sometimes subject to ruthless chopping - nothing stands still in a garden.
Supporters of the Trust were then free to wander at will through the gardens. The early autumn sunshine brought out the warmth of apples and berries, glowing against the dark surrounding yew hedges and complementing the bright blues and terracotta of the many architectural features which are such an important aspect of these very theatrical gardens.
