The Castle Inn, one of Benson's several former coaching inns

The latest parish earmarked for VCH Oxfordshire's forthcoming Ewelme Hundred volume (VCH Oxfordshire XVIII) is now available online. Originating as an important Anglo-Saxon royal estate centre, Benson later became a significant coaching stop on the Oxford-London road, and is now best known for its important RAF Station, which began as a small grass airfield constructed in 1937-9. The new account also includes Benson's rural hamlets of Preston Crowmarsh, Fifield, and Roke.

Twelve other parishes to be included in the volume are already available as work-in-progress. The volume itself will go to press next year and appear in 2016.
