John Taylor

John Taylor - not just the water poet.

John Chandler has revisited the journeys of John Taylor and in this paper discusses his advocacy of waterborne trade and communications generally in the early 17th century. His most vigorous campaigns were intended to boost the economies of two cities - Salisbury and Gloucester - by encouraging them to exploit their rivers and develop as commercial hubs.  He will also examine recent work, which has given Taylor a higher profile in the genre of travel literature.

John Chandler is local historian and publisher, particularly well-known in the South-West. He is currently County Editor of VCH Gloucestershire.
