Death of stalwart supporter of Durham VCH

We were very saddened to hear that Kit Bartram, one of our most stalwart supporters, died on 18 October 2013.

Kit has been a subscriber to the Durham VCH Trust since it launched more than 20 years ago, and with his wife, Jo, was probably the most consistent attender at annual subscribers' meetings and book launches. He could trace his Sunderland shipbuilding credentials back to George Bartram, an orphan, who was apprenticed as a ship carpenter at the age of 11, in 1812, to William and John Gales, shipbuilders, of Hylton Ferry. From this small start grew a great Sunderland firm of shipbuilders. Kit, a former deputy lieutenant of County Durham,  was much looking forward to seeing the forthcoming Durham VCH volume on Sunderland, and we are very sorry indeed that he now won't be able to do so. Kit, a loyal, generous and kindly friend and supporter, will be sadly missed by the Trust.
