VCH volume for Sunderland goes into production

A new and comprehensive history of Sunderland will be out next summer. Scheduled for publication in July 2014, the volume covers the histories of the city's central parishes - Bishopwearmouth and Monkwearmouth - from the earliest times, into the 21st century. It includes landscape and buildings, trade and industry, social and religious developments, politics and war - every aspect of the growth of a great town.

The manuscript of almost 200,000 words, along with 90 images, has now gone into production and will appear as Durham VCH vol. V Sunderland, published by Boydell, at a cost of about £95.
