Launch of Basingstoke: A Medieval town c1000-c1600 by John Hare

The launch took place before an audience of nearly 100 and in the presence of the mayor of Basingstoke, Councillor Frankum; a deputy lord-lieutenant of Hampshire, Mr Nigel McNair Scott; and the vice-chairman of the county council, Councillor Still.

Dr John Hare presented the highlights of his history. Professor Steven Gunn of Merton College, Oxford, welcomed the publication and spoke of Merton College's lands in the medieval town of Basingstoke.

The launch took place in Church Cottage which dates from the 16th-18th century.

This is the third Short following those on Mapledurwell (2012) and Steventon (2016). It is the first of those that will consider the fascinating history of Basingstoke itself. More is on the way.
