Celebrate the start of the Olympic Year

31 January, 2011 - 17:15

Blackheath: The nursery ground of organised sport in the UK

The Locality and Region seminar starts the Olympic year with this stimulating - and perhaps controversial - paper to be given by Neil Rhind MBE FSA, the leading authority on the architectural and social history of Blackheath and Greenwich.

Blackheath in south-east London holds a remarkable record in the development of sporting activity - golf, cricket, athletics, Rugby football and hockey - all stemming from modest private club activity for the well-to-do leading to the development of the international scene. All highlighted by the 2012 Olympics.
