Leicestershire local history goes global

Lutterworth market

It can be all too easy to focus on the history of an individual town or village and overlook how everyday life was shaped by wider events and relationships. The students taking part in this year's summer project chose from a range of topics looking at the history of Lutterworth in the post-medieval period: St Mary's church on the eve of the Reformation, shopping in the17th century, the impact of the 1870 Education Act on Lutterworth's schools, Lutterworth's police and the Feilding Palmer Hospital before the NHS. Niamh Deane, a history undergraduate from the University of Leicester, studied three 17th-century probate inventories for large stores in the town, and examined how the range of goods for sale could be affected by wars, protectionism and international relations. Her essay is now available on the VCH Explore website. www.victoriacountyhistory.ac.uk/explore/items/retail-trade-Lutterworth
