Talk by Leicestershire VCH

We are delighted to have been invited to speak at this FREE event on 25-26 November. Maggie Cooper (a very talented artist/basketmaker) has put together an interesting programme, with a mix of talks, films, workshops, displays, demonstrations and guided walks. We will also be selling copies of our Castle Donington history. We were amazed in May to see Maggie's life-sized basketry horse that she has made in different colours of willow. Our talk is about how basketry was one of the main occupations in Castle Donington in the 19th century. The craft involved the whole family, and led to a specific bylaw in 1878 giving 4 weeks exemption from attending school to children over 8 years employed in peeling osier rods.
