The skull of Scottish soldier 1650

The Somerset County History Trust presents its 5th Mick Aston Lecture LOST LIVES, NEW VOICES:  by Professor Chris Gerrard of the University of Durham.

Chris Gerrard will tell the story of the discovery in November 2013 of two mass burials on a construction site in Durham. A team of archaeologists spent the next two years establishing the identity of the human remains. They were found to be some of the Scottish prisoners who died in the autumn of 1650 in Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral following the Battle of Dunbar on the south-east coast of Scotland.

Professor Chris Gerrard is co-author of the book 'Lost Lives, New Voices: Unlocking the Stories of the 1650 Scottish Soldiers at the Battle of Dunbar 1650,’ winner of the Best Archaeological book at the 2018 British Archaeological Awards.
