Chippenham Boundaries, draft map

Work on volume 20 of the VCH Wiltshire series (Chippenham area) has produced its first draft texts which are now available online. These include the religious history of Chippenham parish and part of the social history, dealing with the development of education provision, (both by Rosalind Johnson), and the first part of the introduction (by John Chandler). Work is in progress to complete these sections, as well as Chippenham economic history (Richard Hoyle). A trawl of printed primary sources, mostly of the medieval period, has been undertaken by Gordon McKelvie, covering all the parishes to be included in the volume. These draft entries can be found on the Wiltshire Work-in-Progress pages of this website.

It is expected that work on Chippenham’s landowners, local government, public services and MPs will begin in 2018. Projects are under discussion to fund research on three of the outlying parishes: Kington St Michael, Kington Langley and Bremhill; work with Bremhill volunteers is planned to begin early in 2018.
