19th-century estate houses at Battleton
New Battleton, is a planned early 18th-century settlement on the west bank of the Barle south of Dulverton bridge. Here in the 18th century Humphrey Sydenham built houses called South Sea, Caspian Sea, East India, Lisbon, Morocco, Japan and Mount Atlas.
Battleton House was the home of a later Sydenham, a local doctor, and many houses were rebuilt in the 19th century.
The east side of the road is remarkable for a series of 19th-century estate cottages. Much of the west side is occupied by early Dulverton council housing.
