We hope you will be able to join us for the next Locality and Region seminar on Tuesday 30 April

Digital recording of churches and chapels in Nottinghamshire

Professor John Beckett, University of Nottingham

The Southwell and Nottingham Church History Project was set up to establish a database of information on the 300+ churches and 100+ former churches and sites in order help parishes appreciate their church buildings and provide booklets and information for visitors and tourists.

In addition the website, http://southwellchurches.history.nottingham.ac.uk/_main/hindex.php provides historic information to Church Architects, Archaeologists and Conservators to enable them to make proposals on maintenance and improvement of our churches in a more informed way. It is also intended to enable family historians to seek out information by ensuring that records are properly protected and preserved.

Professor John Beckett will talk about the process of digitally recording the churches of the diocese for inclusion in this resource and the lessons learned during the exercise as well as the historical insights gained as part of the process.
