Of the merchants, by the merchants, for the merchants: the development of the Common Staithe at King’s Lynn, Norfolk

Dr Jonathan Kewley, Historic England

The Hanseatic warehouse at King’s Lynn in Norfolk is now relatively well-known. Less familiar to many is the Common Staithe, a larger complex of riverside buildings, owned by Lynn Corporation, which has been in continuous mercantile use from the mediaeval period onwards – since the mid-19th century as a base for river pilots, but before that as a quadrangle of warehouses, cellars and a custom house. This talk will trace its development from the earliest land reclamation in the area, putting it in the context of other North European ports, and discuss the surviving elements.

All welcome.
