Following a number of exciting local history projects in schools across England, educational material for this website has been developed with teachers, pupils, historians and education specialists. The themes, activities, timelines and cross-curricular nature of the material provide widely applicable models, which can be adapted to your local area.

EPE Learning Programme

England’s Past for Everyone (EPE) produced engaging local history activities for life-long learners, volunteers, school children and young people.

The EPE project involved:

  • volunteers researching local history and undertaking fieldwork alongside professional historians and archaeologists;
  • a programme of practical activities and online material which encourage the use of local history in schools and all parts of the National Curriculum;
  • publishing a new series of paperback books; and
  • free access to local history materials from transcribed wills to photographs and audio files via the interactive Explore website.

EPE delivered 13 school projects across 10 counties to show how local history can support work across the curriculum, in both a primary and secondary setting.  These projects involved over 700 children in historical activity across England.
