VCH Style guidelines

Using the guidelines

These guidelines are intended for authors and editors of the Victoria County History but may be of use to anyone writing about local history more generally. They supersede and complement earlier versions given in various forms since the little beige books.

This is intended to be an online resource which will be easier to keep up to date and to maintain than a paper version. It has the advantage of being searchable both alphabetically (using the glossary) and by category (using the list on the left hand side of this page).

That said, we recognise that some users may prefer other forms (for example a printable PDF version) and this is under development.

Please be aware that despite much work carried out already and our best efforts there will still be minor errors, omissions, inconsistencies and points that require clarification. Should you find any, no matter how trivial, please let us know as soon as possible.

All queries on this style guide should be addressed to the editor and training coordinator at Central Office, Adam Chapman: Adam.Chapman@sas.ac.uk
